If you’re ready to donate your items to help those in need, you can search for a store near you and hand them to a volunteer. The Dos and Don'ts of Donating

Item Damage

Items are allowed to have signs of use, but should not be badly damaged. For example, if clothes or homewares are ripped, broken, or badly stained, it is not suitable for donation.

Dirty Items

All donations should be in sale condition. This means they should be cleaned or washed before they are bagged for donation. For example, if a shirt smells or a chair is covered in dirt, they are not suitable for donation.

Missing Pieces

Items should be complete, and function as they were intended upon original purchase. For example, if a board game is missing pieces, or a handbag is missing a strap, they are not suitable for donation.

Vinnies loves to accept donation of all kinds, and we appreciate your willingness to part with your goods, but we must also donate consciously and respectfully. In short, the best rule of thumb is, if you wouldn’t donate it to a friend, don’t donate it to Vinnies.

How to Donate

If you’re ready to declutter and donate, here are a few simple steps on what to do. 

 

  1. Check it – Check that all of your items are in good condition, and suitable for donation. 
  2. Wash it – Make sure your items are clean and in sale condition.
  3. Bag it – If you’re donating baggable goods, enclose them in a bag ready for donation. 
  4. Donate it - Visit your local Vinnies store, and give your donation to a Vinnies volunteer.

        Become a Volunteer

        Volunteering at a Vinnies store is a great opportunity to be engaged with your community, and to support our good works. There are a few reasons you might consider volunteering:

        • Socialising – Volunteering as part of the Vinnies team is a great way to meet new people, and get back into a routine in a team environment.

        • Learn New Skills – Our volunteers get to take on a range of responsibilities such as customer service, donation processing, stocktake, management, and more. 

        • Make a Difference – Our stores help us to assist people in need, and they only exist with the help of our wonderful volunteers. You can volunteer knowing you’re helping make a difference.

        But these are not the only ways we help, in fact, Vinnies helps a large range of people in various ways, including families experiencing domestic violence, individuals struggling with drug & alcohol addiction, immigrants struggling to assimilate to a new home, and many more. 

        Without your generosity, and your decision to shop consciously, we wouldn’t be able to help all of these people who desperately need support. 

        Opshopping doesn’t just help those in need, but it also helps our planet. With a large portion of purchases being from fast fashion brands, the demand for more, for new, and for cheap fashion grows. To keep up with this demand, fast fashion brands are consuming more resources, and many are creating product via unethical practices. As consumers buy more, they also discard more, which often ends up as landfill. 

        By opshopping, you are taking effective action to decrease demand and slow fast fashion. You are helping extend the life of quality goods, and to prevent unnecessary landfill.  

        When we talk about Feel Good Finds, we’re talking about how good it feels to make affordable purchases that you love, while knowing that you’re helping those in need, and protecting our planet. As we like to say, be part of the solution, not the pollution.
