Northern Territory E-Newsletter 2nd March 2022
Northern Territory President Jocelyn Cull
Edited from Annual Report.
“Do not be afraid of new beginnings. Be creative. Be inventive. Organize new works of love in the service of the poor. You who have energy; who have enthusiasm; who want to do something of value for the future; be inventive, launch out; do not wait”- (Frederic Ozanam).
The past 12 months have been a time for change and renewal. Changes have included restructuring our services, staffing and Rob Lutter’s appointment as Chief Executive Officer. There have also been changes to the composition of the NT Council, the welcoming of new Conference members and office bearers and the election of myself as the new Territory President.
Our Society has embraced the adoption of advisory subcommittees whose members graciously provide their expertise and guidance for our services. This advice is invaluable to core business activities, including housing, retail, emergency relief and social justice advocacy. These subcommittees supplement our Society’s employees’ professional skills and mirror the changes to our services for those in need. Social and affordable housing is unfortunately a growth area where there is a significant need in our community. Housing and wrap-around support services are where Vinnies excels and will be a key focus over the coming years.
Northern Territory CEO Rob Lutter
Edited from Annual Report.
During this reporting period, we have implemented sub-committees to reflect the new leadership structure and our strategic direction. Recruited for new roles and developed plans for growth that will see us extend our retail footprint and leverage opportunities for growth in housing, homeless and aged services over the coming years.
Despite the changes, the team on the ground has not missed a beat continuing to provide high standards of care and support for those we serve in our community. I am grateful for the dedicated and hardworking team of members, volunteers and staff who demonstrate their compassion for those in need every day. In our sector, strong relationships are the lifeblood of good works. Our relationships with the government continue to develop positively and this is evident in their ongoing support of our work.
Moving forward we will continue to build our presence with our communities and key stakeholders through strong marketing, communication and lobbying. The Society will grow through strong financial management, outstanding service delivery, capacity building and looking after our combined wellbeing.

CathCroc
Catholic Diocese of Darwin - supporting young people in their Faith journey.
To further assist parents, grand parents, teachers, guardians and other carers involved in children’s faith life journey, the Catholic Diocese of Darwin has developed an animated character called CathCroc with whom children can engage and pose questions. After questions are recieved, periodically a video will be shared on the Diocesan digital channels featuring CathCroc acknowledging the question/questioner. CathCroc would then request Bishop Charles Gauci (who would also appear in the video) to share his thoughts and answer the question.
If you have any questions about the beautiful creations around us email askcathcroc@gmail.com

Margrith Koening
Tennent Creek.
Thank you to our dedicated Volunteers, without you we would not be able to support those in need in the Territory Community. We would like to acknowledge the 14 years of committed Service by Margrith Koenig who previously ran the Tennant Creek Vinnies Store. We are blessed in the Top End to have such caring people to help those in need. It is the good works of people like Margrith who keep the Vincentian spirit strong, though consistent action and engaging with Our Mission to serve others.
"In my life I want to become better and do a little good." - Fedrick Ozanam
Thank you Tennant & District Times for reaching out and acknowledging the dedication of Margrith.

Celebrating in the Northern Territory
Christmas at Ozanam House Day Centre for the Homeless
Christmas is a special Time of year for Territorians and a time for love sharing and gratitude for the friends, family and comforts so many people experience a lack of in our community. Our 2021 Christmas Party was a joyous occasion for our homeless companions. Vinnies NT was awestruck with community support and is ever grateful to the yearly supporters who contribute to the event. Simon George and Sons, a local grocer provided delicious salads and a generous selection of soft fruit that are preferable to those with teeth issues and often craved by the poor as a luxury. A local family business Rachael Designa Cakes contributed beautifully decorated hand-made Christmas theme cakes that were well received by companions and volunteers. Nightcliff Woolworths donated soft drinks and juice, Christmas theme plates, napkins and bon bons, a timeless tradition that made the occasion very festive with people sharing a laugh over the ‘pop’ of a Christmas cracker. Other special mentions and thanks go to our generous Volunteers, Foodies Book Club, Double Tree by Hilton and The Christmas Band without whom, our celebration for the homeless would not have been possible. Vinnies NT is proud of our good works at Ozanam House Day Centre for the homeless. Operating since 1974, it’s a safe place and a compassionate community embracing all who visit.

The Northern Territory currently has 12 x the national average of homelessness and the demand for Vinnies’s assistance continues to rise across our services.
The important work of volunteers means that the Society can use its resources directly to serve the poor.
Internationally, the Society operates in 153 countries and has over 800,000 members.
In Australia, St Vincent de Paul Society has the largest volunteer base of any charity.
Nationally there are 60,000 volunteers performing the work which, if paid, would mean that the Society could not reach those in need.
We are a lay Catholic organisation working towards a more just and compassionate society. Without the support of Government, representatives of NGOs, volunteers, members of the Society, our staff and the generosity of the public, the good work of the Society would not be possible -Thank you all!
