Northern Territory E-Newsletter Wednesday 1st June 2022
Northern Territory President Jocelyn Cull
From the President’s Desk
As you are undoubtedly aware, the Society will hold its annual CEO Sleep Out on Thursday 23 June, at the Fannie Bay Gaol.
The sleepout is a crucial fundraising and awareness-building event for the Society in the Territory (and also nationally) to raise money to assist our homeless companions.
Not so much a fun fact, approximately 5.6% of the population within the Northern Territory is homeless.
Due to COVID restrictions, this is the first time in at least two years that we have held the event in this format and have asked the public to get behind us with their support.
Accordingly, the event is in its ‘rebuilding’ stage, where we have a new Council, staff and volunteers organising and running this event for the first time. Therefore, we can expect the event to build with learnings applied over time to get bigger, better, and more successful every year.
Numbers-wise, it was last reported that we had 19 CEOs signed up and ready to participate in our event. However, this sleepout is also extended to the broader community – the more the merrier from our perspective!
Please encourage your Conference members, friends and supporters to sign-up for this event.
For anyone who wants to be involved, you DO NOT need to be a CEO or Community Leader – this is a generic link based on what is happening down south with the event.
I would also encourage anyone that may not want to sleep out but still show their support to come down to the Fannie Bay Gaol on the night (even for a couple of hours) – extra numbers will help build the atmosphere and the sense of event.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Luci Lloyd (the event coordinator) or myself
Northern Territory CEO Rob Lutter
From the Casuarina Head Office
I hope you have had a lovely May and you are keeping safe and well.
We require more volunteers in our stores and with Emergency Relief and all other areas.
If you or someone you know would love to help please contact us at the Darwin Office (08) 8948 8100 or email us at volunteering@vinniesnt.org.au
Thank you to all our volunteers we cannot do our good work without you.
The NT CEO Sleepout is on Thursday 23rd June at the old gaol in Fannie Bay.
We welcome anyone, you do not need to be a CEO. Please join me for the night to experience just a little of what it is like to sleep rough.
All funds raised will stay right here in the NT and will go to much need support for our homeless.
There has been some disruption to our stores and services in May due to Covid we apologise if this has caused any inconvenience.
The Council have been busy this month had their Strategic Retreat, to develop our next Strategic Plan and a Council Meeting.
I am forever grateful for the dedicated and hardworking team of members, volunteers and staff who demonstrate their compassion for those in need every day, thank you and take care.

CathCroc
Catholic Diocese of Darwin - supporting young people in their Faith journey.
To further assist parents, grand parents, teachers, guardians and other carers involved in children’s faith life journey, the Catholic Diocese of Darwin has developed an animated character called CathCroc with whom children can engage and pose questions. After questions are recieved, periodically a video will be shared on the Diocesan digital channels featuring CathCroc acknowledging the question/questioner. CathCroc would then request Bishop Charles Gauci (who would also appear in the video) to share his thoughts and answer the question.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the Holy Family ‘Out of School Hours Care’ (OSHC) Fundraisers.
Since 2013, OSHC students have sold icy poles annually for St Vincent de Paul annual Christmas Appeal.
Recently Mrs Carmel Ong presented them with an Appreciation Certificate for their efforts on behalf of the Society.
Students have done a wonderful job collecting between $1,100 & $1,400 annually in an effort to help disadvantaged families over the Christmas season.
Thank you Holy Family Catholic Primary School teachers, parents, guardians and students, your dedication and commitment to our mission is inspiring!

THE NORTHERN TERRITORY GOVERNMENT
Reception to celebrate
This year Vinnies was invited to celebrate with other community service volunteers from across the Northern Territory.
Vinnies joined other volunteer organisations linked to local sports, emergency services, multicultural communities, students and those like us, who help the vulnerable in the community. Unfortunately the event had limited spaces and we were unable to invite all of our committed volunteers, so please enjoy our Vinnies Christmas in July Celebration of Our Good Works.
Thank you to volunteers who were able to attend the National Volunteer week Celebration at Parliament Housing on Friday 20th of May 2022, it was a pleasure to see the number of dedicated and generous Territorians who donate their time to community endeavours.

The Northern Territory currently has 12 x the national average of homelessness and the demand for Vinnies’s assistance continues to rise across our services.
The important work of volunteers means that the Society can use its resources directly to serve the poor.
Internationally, the Society operates in 153 countries and has over 800,000 members.
In Australia, St Vincent de Paul Society has the largest volunteer base of any charity.
Nationally there are 60,000 volunteers performing the work which, if paid, would mean that the Society could not reach those in need.
We are a lay Catholic organisation working towards a more just and compassionate society. Without the support of Government, representatives of NGOs, volunteers, members of the Society, our staff and the generosity of the public, the good work of the Society would not be possible -Thank you all!
